Maui Volcano: the best hike of your life

March 23, 2022February 6, 2023 by Surfing Airplanes

Maui is the place where dreams come true. You can sit on a beautiful beach watching the waves, play golf on one of the most beautiful courses in the world, explore the underwater world, discover charming small towns, or drive along winding roads with incredible vegetation and postcard-worthy waterfalls. And of course, go for an unforgettable hike on a volcano. See how to hike in a Maui Volcano in this article.

Maui

Maui is Hawaii’s second-largest island with a population of 120,000 people. It has volcanic origins and was formed from two volcanoes joined by a flat isthmus. Maui is the most sophisticated island of the Hawaiian archipelago.

To the west of Maui are the islands of Molokai and Lanai, while to the southwest are the island of Kaho’olawe and the small island of Molokini. Maui is rich in natural attractions, volcanoes, and waterfalls.

On the eastern part of the island is the youngest volcano, which is also the highest mountain on the island, the 3,055-meter Haleakala volcano. The western area of the island is made up of the remaining old volcano, much eroded by time, which forms the West Maui Mountains.

The main commercial, administrative and business center of the island of Maui is the village of Kahului, located on the isthmus, which connects the two parts of the island. It is home to Maui’s airport and the main seaport.

The weather in Hawaii is mild all year round. But if you want to know the best time to travel, it is best to go between April and September, basically from late spring to late summer. Avoid traveling in winter, especially in December and January. The problem is the rain, which usually spoils beach and hiking plans.

Well, now that you know that Maui is a destination with countless tourist attractions, let’s tell you about the volcano hikes.

Maui Volcano

Haleakala is Maui’s eastern volcano that forms more than 75% of the island, with an altitude of 3055 m, making it the 85th most prominent mountain in the world. It is a dormant volcano with landscapes worthy of a science fiction movie: rocks, small mounds of earth, and reddish aridity. The highest point is called Puʻu ʻUlaʻula. It has an incredible view.

Haleakala National Park covers more than 130 square kilometers and offers many trails to explore. Otherwise, Haleakala National Park plays two very important roles: it protects wildlife that exists nowhere else, and it is the melting point between ancient and modern Hawaiian culture. A visit to this amazing park on the southeast coast of the island of Maui will take you to volcanic landscapes and austere subtropical forests.

One of the most common activities within this volcanic park is hiking. There, you can enjoy two popular trails along Maui’s Haleakala Crater. All with a certified guide. You will reach the summit by hiking a lava trail and admiring the vast views.

With your guide, you will also learn about Maui’s heritage and culture, hike through the alien terrain inside a volcanic crater, and enjoy a picnic lunch.

At the top, it is usually very cold and quite windy. It costs 25 dollars per car to enter the park, and the best option is to go to see the sunrise or sunset.

If you are going to see the sunrise, arrive before 4 am, because the parking lot is very crowded and it is hard to find a place, go warm and bring your blanket because it is very cold.

Local tip

You can descend from the top of Haleakala by mountain bike. The descent begins at the park exit and continues for 16 km. After that, can you imagine how delightful it would be to enjoy the wind on your face and Maui’s landscapes?

…

In conclusion, hiking in a Maui volcano is sure to be a life-changing experience. Therefore, you will discover a place of beauty that evokes admiration in people of all ages.
